As with other country sports, fishing is a popular pastime in East Lothian. The area offers opportunities for the keen angler to fish for all three of Scotland's game fish, salmon, sea trout, and brown trout.

There are two main fishing rivers in East Lothian, the Esk and the Tyne, where all three native game fish are found. Additionally, brown trout may be caught in the Hopes and Whiteadder reservoirs.
Regular stocks of Rainbow trout populate the Markle Fisheries at East Linton, where fly fishing from the bank is popular and also at the Tweeddale Fisheries, here in Gifford which is open 7 days and operates a March to September boat season.

The Tweeddale Arms Hotel is the perfect place to stay in a relaxing environment, forming the base for a productive and enjoyable fishing trip.
For sea fishing, the harbours at Dunbar and North Berwick operate boat hire and fishing trips from spring to late autumn. Improving runs of migratory fish has resulted in good catches of sea trout in the Tyne, more usually regarded as a brown trout river.
The best river bet for sea trout is perhaps the south Esk, where the sea trout lie in the pools providing excellent night fly fishing. May is the best month for salmon fishing in the River Esk.
