Gifford is one of Scotland’s most picturesque villages set in the East Lothian. The village dates back to 1267 when Sir Hugo Gifford commissioned the building of Yester Castle.
|
The Scots fought the English on several occasions for possession of the castle, and gradually the community of Yester grew around it. The village of Gifford was founded in 1708 when Yester was moved to the North West and renamed after the Gifford family.
The Reverend John Witherspoon was born in the village in 1723. He went on to become the 6th President of New Jersey and was a signatory on the American Declaration of Independence on 4 July 1776.

Gifford's surrounding area provides the visitor with stunning vistas of the Lammermuir Hills, the dramatic scenery of the North Sea coastline, and numerous castles and areas of historical importance. The region is recognised worldwide for its excellent golf courses, including Muirfield and Archerfield amongst many others.
The Tweeddale Arms Hotel, formerly known as 'the Great Inn at Gifford' in a title deed of 1687, is one of the oldest buildings in Gifford. It has views across the village green to the avenue of lime trees dating back 300 years. The avenue leads to Yester House, formerly home to the Marquisses of Tweeddale.
Set in such picturesque surroundings the hotel does not disappoint. The Tweeddale Arms offers 13 en suite bedrooms providing comfort with modern facilities.
